This got me thinking. Apart from patients who have no drive to breath/are sedated heavily, wouldn't PC ventilation be the 'least harmful' form of ventilation? By that I mean since it factors in the patients lung characteristics, the…

Hello Stephanie, Good question! Perhaps the answer is also revealed in the patient’s scenario. Additional auto-peep (or intrinsic peep) occurs when the lungs become more compliant (high in comparison to stiff). Another reason is that…

Although it has has been answered well. just to add one more thing for understanding. why VC+ does well with stiff lungs. it has been answered. remember that VC alone is flow limited volume cycled ventilation. Also if you see the waveform of VC+, it…

In VC+ mode on a Ventilator you set the I-time for the patient. If the I -time not set appropriately this will not allow the patient to exhale completely resulting in Auto Peep. This was the reason Why your patient benifitted from being changed to…

Hi Stephanie with conventional volume control restricts flow during inspiration and requires the practitioner to attempt to set an inspiratory flow that matches patient demand. VC+ does not restrict flow during the inspiratory phase, and…

Hi there! VC+ (on the 840) is pretty much exactly the same as Pressure Regulated Volume Control on some other vents. You set a volume, but the ventilator delivers a pressure control type breath with variable flow (patient effort/dynamic dependent)…

Hi, You are not a dummy. PFT can be overwhelming at first but once you know the basics its pretty straight forward. I was really lucky to have an excellent professor who knew his material and drilled the information into our brains lol.…

PLEASE HELP ME!!!!!!

I hate to sound stupid, but I am first year RT student and I am having trouble understanding PFT's. The problems she gave us on the papre only have FVC, FEV1(L), and FEV1/FVC(%). Everywhere I look on the net seems to over explain or maybe I am a dummy who is just not reading it right. Can someone out here please help me understand?

Hi,

You are not a dummy. PFT can be overwhelming at first but once you know the basics its pretty straight forward. I was really lucky to have an excellent professor who knew his material and drilled the information into our brains lol. unfortunately I don't have his lectures on file. If I did I would send them to you. But I did come across a really simplified explanation of PFT in an Asthma book that I'm studying now. Here is the link to the book: http://www.filefactory.com/file/148a14/n/0071447377_rar
Go to Chapter 6. It's a bit simplified but it really explains the basics well in casual language. Hope you find it helpful and if you still need help with a specific problem I don't mind helping you out over the phone after May 12th coz I'm not currently in the States and will be back then insha Allah.

Good luck :)
