Yes, I am planning to do first my RRT exam here in Toronto, which is in July this year. I also would like to finish the degree part of my program which is offered by Dalhousie University in Halifax. This will give me Bachelors in Health Sciences degree. This is one more year addition to my previous studies and I can do it through distance learning, therefore I am not restricted where I work as an RRT.

Why did you recommend doing first the Canadian RRT exam? Is it recognized in the US as well?

I thought regardless what registration I have here in Canada, I still need to do the NBRC in the US as well as I need to obtain the state licence to be able to work there.

I am grateful for the information you providing for me, hopefully I can get all the licences and be able to work in Memphis.

To practice in the state of Tennessee, two professional requirements must be met. You must be credentialed as a CRT or RRT and you must hold a license in the state where you practice. Anyone wishing to practice respiratory care must be a graduate of a recognized (CoARC in the US) respiratory care program. I do know that your canadian RRT credential is recognized here in the US.

Our (BCHS) graduates are allowed to work (in TN) for up to 12 months after graduation while they complete their credentialing exams. The CRT is the minimum professional credential recognized for licensure in all the 48 continental (US) states but the majority of our grads acquire the RRT credential within that year after graduaton.

The exams for credentialling can be completed at local (Memphis)online centers directly linked to the National Board for Respiratory Care in Kansas. Your best pathway to employment here in TN would include completion of the canadian RRT exam before moving to the US. However, if that is not in your plans perhaps you might contact the American Association for Respiratory Care (972-243-2772) or the NBRC to inquire about credentialling options. Licensure application can be obtrained online at http://health.state.tn.us/providers.htm#licensure

I hope this has been of help to you. In Memphis, there are two primary acute care providers with a total of approximately 30 hospitals in the region (seven facilities here in the metro Memphis area). Additionally there are other providers, temp agencies/ home care/ DME providers/ sleep labs that may need therapists at various times.

While I know that canadian therapists have found jobs in the US, I am not familiar with the immigration or visa requirements. Perhaps your school faculty has addressed these issues for other upcomng graduates. Again, please write if you need additional info or clarification. And Good Luck...
