What is Prophylactic PEEP

According to the early  publications(1970) it was thought that use of PEEP not only improves hypoxemia but also reduces the risk of acute respiratory distress syndrome (ARDS). That's why Prophylactic PEEP of 5-8cmH2O. was used.

However late publications do not support this. so the prophylactic PEEP has no more utility to prevent ARDS.
