hi
studies show that approximately 5ml in an adult and less in paediatrics
5 mls for a radial, pedal or brachial line, 10 mls for a femoral line. About 3 mls in infants, which will usually be given back to the patient after. For the older kids and adults we do not give the blood back.
If you use Vacutainer it holds 5ml of blood and you can draw 1-2cc of blood and later push this blood back into the patient.

It depends on the a line system and the patient. if you use open Aline in adults, it should be 5 ml. if you use closed system a line, you just draw blood up to two ml, have ur sample and push the rest back to the patient.
Remember that in pediatrics and neonates intake and output counts alot, so you better do it while the nurses are aware of it
